What is Antimicrobial Peptide PN5?
PN5 is an antimicrobial peptide derived from Pinus densiflora (pine needle) that has shown promising therapeutic potential against multidrug-resistant bacteria and inflammation. This unique combination makes it a promising candidate for developing new treatments against antibiotic-resistant bacteria and associated inflammatory conditions.
Antimicrobial Activity
PN5 exhibits antimicrobial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. It shows membrane permeabilization ability against bacteria. PN5 maintains antimicrobial stability in the presence of elastase, a proteolytic enzyme. Importantly, it does not induce resistance in bacteria [R][R].
Anti-inflammatory Properties
PN5 suppresses proinflammatory cytokines mediated by NF-ฮบB and mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling. The peptide has demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity in inflamed mouse livers in a septic shock model. PN5 also demonstrates immunomodulatory properties by neutralizing LPS, a major component of Gram-negative bacterial cell walls that can trigger severe inflammatory responses [R][R].
