Alpha GPC
L-Alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine (alpha-GPC, choline alfoscerate) is a high quality choline source found naturally in the brain. Unlike cheaper choline sources like choline bitartrate or choline citrate. It is also functions as a parasympathomimetic acetylcholine precursor which, in turn, may have potential for treatment of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
Alpha GPC is able to cross the blood-brain barrier allowing for easy absorption and high bio-availability. It is GRAS (generally regarded as safe) and despite some evidence that it may improve performance in sports and strength or endurance training can not be banned by the WADA (World anti-doping agency) due to it’s being a natural sourced supplement (basically a highly refined form of lecithin).
GPC is a lipidinous substance somewhat related to the b-vitamins. It’s the most efficient choline prodrug as far as being able to influence both systemic and brain concentrations of choline. CDP-choline (also known as Citicoline) is the only other choline source that improves cell membrane integrity through influencing lipid membranes.
In addition to being a successful adjunct treatment (often combined with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors) in Alzheimer’s therapy it’s a popular supplement among athletes for it’s ability to increase GH (growth hormone) production as well as enhancing power output, endurance.
Alpha GPC is highly hygroscopic in it’s 100% pure form so it draws moisture from the air. As a result, minimum exposure to air is vital to prevent it from degrading to an oily, gel in just a short time. Gel caps filled with GPC can dissolve through so proper storage is of the utmost importance to preserve the viability of this substance.
